Watkins Steel Demolished

On Wednesday, July 9th, workers began demolishing the Watkins Steel building at the intersection of 2nd Street and McLean Boulevard.

The building is being torn down to make way for a new City Library
which is expected to be completed in 2011.

Great Pictures! I wanted to get over there when they were demolishing but didn't.
I grew up within a few blocks of the Watkins building. As kids, we would look forward to their open house each year. It was always good for a doughnut and giveaways.

Wouldn't it be neat if they could use the bricks from the Watkins building to build the new library. When they did the streetscape on Douglas, under the blacktop, there was an old brick road that had been covered up for years. Carefully, they lifted the brick up and put it aside and then a truck came and picked them up. I think they put those old bricks somewhere besides the landfill. It would be neat to see them used as pavers for the railway corridor walkways or somewhere around the library.
